To reduce the fatigue-related risk within an operation, organisations should ensure they have the necessary systems in place. Effective management of fatigue within an organisation requires a systematic approach referred to as a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) 1. An FRMS should complement the broader Safety Management System and should define and guide an organisation to systematically evaluate, manage and mitigate fatigue-related risk (2, 3). Melius Consulting has developed an online Fatigue Risk Management Systems Diagnostic Tool to support organisations to objectively assess their current state of fatigue risk. This online tool supports the implementation of evidence-based targeted strategies and the efficient allocation of resources.

Figure 1: Key elements of the Fatigue Risk Diagnostic Tool

The diagnostic tool consists of 12 essential elements that should be considered in the development of a systematic approach to managing fatigue-related risk. Within each of these elements, there are a series of questions relating to controls for managing fatigue within an organisation. Key stakeholders within an organisation are asked to consider these questions based on the organisations’ current state. Organisations may choose to hold a series of workshops with key stakeholders, facilitated by Melius Consulting, further enhancing the diagnostic outcome.  A final report identifying critical areas for improvement is generated and reviewed by our Chief Adviser (Dr Ian Dunican).

Melius Consulting has been successfully using this diagnostic tool in the oil and gas, mining, rail, aviation, and agriculture sectors to assist organisations in developing and improving their fatigue risk management systems by identifying exposure to risk and opportunities for improvement. It has supported our clients in prioritising future strategies and interventions and developing a phased approach to implementation.

We have provided FRMS diagnostics for South 32, Easternwell Drilling, CHC Helicopters and Anglo Gold Ashanti Australia. We are currently undertaking a validation study of this approach with Edith Cowan University.

Prices for a Fatigue Risk Management Systems Diagnostic start at $2,000 and will vary according to the approach and requirements of an organisation.
